~ founded in rockaway beach, queens ny ~

green flash projects is a press dedicated to queer artistry and reciprocity within natural settings. Our mission is to create art experiences that explore the intersections of environment, community, and culture. Through installations, events, and publications, we deepen connections with the natural world, inspire environmental justice, and engage diverse communities in dialogue. By blurring the boundaries between art and life, green flash projects promotes sustainability while raising awareness of ecological and social issues.

ABOUT RALPH HOPKINS

Ralph Hopkins (he/him) is a 76 year old native New Yorker residing in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Known as The Mayor at Riis Beach, he threw participatory beach parties there in the ‘90s involving fashion shows, DJs, and food, and has been a consistent presence for the past six decades. He is also a former chef, and in the ‘70s, became a five-time gold medalist—and one bronze—at the Madison Square Garden Harvest Moon Ball for the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug. He is also a US army veteran.

ABOUT RALPH'S BEACH PARTIES

Ralph's Beach Parties at Riis Beach are not just legendary cultural events; they are deeply intertwined with the rich history of Riis Beach, the oldest gay beach in New York City. Since the early '90s, Ralph Hopkins has transformed this iconic location into a vibrant stage for fashion, art, and community, providing a unique platform for artists, performers, and designers to present their work with the ocean as a backdrop.

Today, Riis beach faces significant challenges, including the city’s demolition of the Neponsit Hospital building and the rapidly eroding shoreline. These changes threaten not only the physical landscape but also the cultural legacy of Riis Beach as a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community. By supporting Ralph's ongoing efforts, donors can play a vital role in preserving and celebrating this important chapter and site in New York City's history as we work together as a conduit for the spirit of these iconic parties, the community they represent, and the land on which they rest.
